i dont want to actually cut down the image. here is a url with the example of what im trying to do:

on the left hand side, youll notice 3 pictures, but it only shows a portion of the whole picture, as apposed to thumbnails which just shrink the image.

and i am trying to build my own script now that ive learned a bit of php. again, thanks.
