Same here. HTML Area is the only one I've used too...

However, I did a trial of a program called Editize promoted at sitepoint.com which uses Java instead of JavaScript. All they readd need is Java installed which most people have.

Browsers supported: IE 4+, Mozilla, Safari, Opera 6.01+ and more
Operating Systems Supported: Windows, Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X

If all else fails, the only thing I can recommend is Google
