Default linking strategy for new site

I'm working on a site at the moment and am wondering about a linking technique that I read about. basically, I'll have a few high page ranked sites of a similar theme link to my site, using only one "keyword phrase".

has anybody tried this?
what do you think about this tactic?

That's a good way to get started. As long as the other sites are relevent. Don't use to many keywords in the keyword phrase.

I also sugegst you submit your site to directories to get things rolling too.

I just finished a long crusade of link submiting to directories. I came accross a great website that gives the link of the directory and it also tells you information about the directory. Like the PR, how fast it is to index it, do you have to pay or not, and a breif description from the webmasters experince with that directory. It was a great website really.
