Google Desktop Search has formally left its beta confines with a 1.0 release that adds support for Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird. The software can also now run as a free-standing search box anywhere on the desktop and utilize plug-ins.
The glitch ... could permit an attacker to secretly search the contents of a personal computer via the Internet.
The problem lies in the fact that GDS intercepts all network connections going to Google and inserts local data into the results - but the researchers built a Java program which made requests to Google, took the local data and transmitted it remotely.
For users, there is apparently some silent updating going on to a new version. But isn't the problem, while apparently patched, an inherent, fundamental design flaw? Does this affect your confidence in using the product?
